A day of honor and closed offices: Here's what's closed on Veterans Day

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice went into place in 1918, effectively ending World War I. Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is now a day of honoring all who have served in the U.S. armed forces, past and present.

Celebrations will include the Howard Plant VFW Post 782's annual ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at Battery Park, Veteran's Day Mass led by Burlington Fire Department Chaplain Father Dallas St. Peter at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Pius X and the fifth annual cannabis giveaway for veterans from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Heady Vermont's location on Battery Street.

Veterans Day is also a state and federal holiday, meaning many public offices and buildings will be closed, even if your workplace isn't. Check this list before doing your errands Friday − it might save you a trip.

City government offices

City offices in Burlington, South Burlington, Essex and Winooski will be closed on Veterans Day. Call other town offices to verify their statuses.

Trash, recycling and compost
