On This Day: Trail Blazers set playoff record for fewest points in a quarter

On May 18, 1999, the Portland Trail Blazers suffered a 93-83 loss to the Utah Jazz in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals and set an NBA playoff record in the process.

The Trail Blazers, who were led by Brian Grant and Damon Stoudamire, held a 78-74 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, after completely unraveling late, they scored just five points in the final period, setting the playoff record for the fewest points in a quarter.

Portland went just 2-of-16 from the field in the period with Grant and Stoudamire accounting for the only two shots while Jim Jackson hit one free throw. Utah was just 4-of-15 from the field but was sent to the free-throw line 19 times, hitting 11 of those attempts to pull out the win.

The Trail Blazers led by as many as 15 points in the contest.

Despite losing Game 1 and setting an all-time low playoff record, the Trail Blazers would go on to win four out of the next five games to advance to the Western Conference Finals. The series with the Jazz proved to be a hard-fought battle with the Trail Blazers prevailing in the end.

From there, the Trail Blazers would be swept by the San Antonio Spurs, who eventually won the title that season after defeating the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Their title in 1999 would become the first of five won under Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich.
