New daycare coming to Henderson

Sep. 7—HENDERSON — Denise Hawkins, director of Hawkins Kid College Daycare, appeared before the Henderson Zoning Board of Adjustment this week to request a special-use permit for a new daycare facility at 155 West Spring St.

"I already have an in-home daycare; I'm already licensed," she said, "I just want to move into a building so I can help more kids."

Hawkins' assistant director, Latoyria Bullock, joined her at the meeting. The facility would have five workers on three shifts throughout each 24-hour period, with 30 kids divided between those shifts. Those numbers are estimates, Hawkins noted.

Though Hawkins said some work has been done to complete the property on West Spring Street, she has a list of further changes that the state will need to approve in the future.

Board Chairman Ruxton Bobbitt told her to keep the storm drain on the property clear. Hawkins agreed to do so and said her neighbors at the location had made the same request.

The facility has no parking. Employees would have to park on the street, but that street has no posted timeframe. A shared parking agreement was included with the application.

The board unanimously granted Hawkins and Bullock their requested permit.

"We're excited," Bullock said after the meeting.

The property had been previously used as a daycare with an application similar to Hawkins' being filed in 2011, Development Director Corey Williams said.
