As daylight saving time comes closer, efforts to make it permanent in the United States are gaining momentum, with the Sunshine Protection Act continuing to be a focal point for some lawmakers.

Despite unanimous support from the Senate in 2022, challenges remain. The bill has yet to pass the House, and some senators are expressing reservations after the fact.

In a recent tweet, Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said changing the clocks should be a thing of the past.

“Alabamians have overwhelmingly expressed their support for the Sunshine Protection Act, and I promised them I’d continue pushing to do away with the outdated practice of adjusting our clocks twice a year,” Tuberville said in a statement. “It’s time for America to move forward and stop falling back. Congress should listen to the people and make Daylight Saving Time permanent.”

A 2023 survey also found the practice of changing the clocks to be unpopular nationally.

When does daylight saving time start in 2024?

In 2024, daylight saving time will begin on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m. You will move your clocks forward an hour and lose an hour's worth of sleep. The sun will rise and set an hour later.

When will we 'fall back' in 2024?

It will end for the year on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 a.m. You will be setting your clocks back an hour and gaining an hour of sleep, and will be welcoming earlier sunrises and sunsets.

What is the Sunshine Protection Act?

The Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate by unanimous consent on March 15, 2022. The bill, introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, would eliminate the changing of clocks to standard time for the months of November to March. If it is enacted, we would have daylight saving time all year, instead of only eight months.
