Days of Our Lives star, Kristian Alfonso, has revealed why she decided to quit the show after 37 years.

The actress stunned fans of the long-running US show when she announced on Instagram that she was leaving the show earlier this month.

Kristian has revealed that when executive producer Ken Corday informed her that her character, Hope Williams Brady, would be written out for around five months, she made the decision to leave.

"And at that moment I thought to myself, you know what, it's time for a change and it was the perfect moment to make that decision," Kristian told ET. "I was taken aback when he said that they wanted, he and [producer] Albert wanted to take me off camera for four to five months.

"It was not something that had ever been discussed but that's what it was, and to come back in five to six months, or four to five months – whatever that time frame was – I just thought, you know what, it's time to really write a new chapter.

"I've had an incredible run there. I've had so many amazing friends and memories. I cannot say enough how I'll miss so many people working there and working with them, but they are in my life and we do socialise, but like I said, I think it's time."

She admitted she'd thought about leaving over the last few years, but the decision about her character being away for such a long time was the push she needed to go through with it.

"But it was as if Ken had opened that door for me just a little bit and I opened it all the way and made the decision to depart Days of Our Lives, which, you know, was my family for such a long time," she said.

Days of Our Lives is currently on hiatus with filming set to resume in September.

Last November, it was reported that the entire cast had been released from their contracts before the soap went on an "indefinite hiatus". Three months later, NBC renewed Days of Our Lives for a 56th season.
