Dayton city employees getting scholarship opportunity through partnership with WGU Ohio

City employees in Dayton will now have a new opportunity to pursue a college education online.

The City of Dayton and Western Governors University Ohio (WGU Ohio) have joined together to allow city employees to pursue four-year and graduate degrees through WGU Ohio’s online programs, spokespersons for both the city and WGU Ohio announced Monday.

Through the program, qualifying city employees will have the chance to apply for $2,500 scholarships to make the programs more affordable.

Dayton Mayor Jeffry Mims, Jr. said access to the program will help employees “further their education and advance their career readiness.”

“As a former educator, I know the power of education in transforming lives, and this partnership will help our employees boost skills and pursue an in-demand degree,” Mims said.

WGU was founded in 1997 by a coalition of 19 U.S. state governors. Ohio became the eighth additional state to partner with WGU in 2018.

The city and WGU Ohio first announced employee benefits in a partnership with the university in 2019.
