Dayton student from LaGrange dies after contracting COVID-19

A University of Dayton student from LaGrange has died after contracting the COVID-19 virus, according to university officials.

Michael Lang, 18, died on Thursday following a “lengthy hospitalization,” according to a message sent to the student body from the university’s president, Eric F. Spina, and other officials.

Lang was a first-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences, the message said. He had returned home to the western suburb on Sept. 13 for remote learning.

“The loss of Michael calls our campus community to honor his memory and support those who are affected by his passing,” the message read.

Lang’s death came as city and state officials have pleaded with residents in recent days to continue adhering to safety precautions as the virus spikes across the state.

On Friday, another 31 people died in Illinois, the state announced, bringing its total death toll to 9,418. There were 3,874 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 for a total of 364,033.

The virus is also increasingly sweeping across the U.S., with more cases reported on Friday across the country than any other day since the pandemic began.
