Lap 199: Yellow... but if the leader got the white flag... this race is over!

Lap 198: Two to go! Big running coming from a far outside line led by Kyle Larsen, helps break up the top line a bit, and now William Byron is in front with the bottom line.

Lap 196: Green green green! Four laps to decide the winner... unless we have another wreck. Ross Chastain leads them out, William Byron, who somehow missed the carnage, in the second spot. Alex Bowman, who started the whole mess, is in third. Austin Cindric, the lone Ford up there, is in fourth.

Lap 195: With five laps to go, under yellow, there are officially 22 cars remaining on the lead lap.

Lap 194: The red flag is lifted and the cars remaining in the race start to turn a lap while the scoring is sorted out. Chase Briscoe, AJ Allmendinger, John Hunter Nemechek, Noah Gragson, Bubba Wallace, David Ragan pit under yellow.

Red flag, Lap 192: Ryan Blaney was among those caught up. he has been released from the care center. Had a bit of a wrist stinger from the steering wheel turning, but he’ll be fine. Brad Keselowski also among those who are out of the race.

Chastain, Bowman, Byron, Cindric, Elliott, Bell, Briscoe, Busch, Allmendinger and Nemechek are your top 10 at the moment.

A replay of the incident appears to show Alex Bowman shove William Byron too hard from behind. Byron goes into Brad Keselowski, who spins sideways into Joey Logano. The crash collected cars from there, and affected more than a dozen cars.

Lap 192: There it is! BIG caution. Yellow is out. Ross Chastain still in front, we’ll sort this out and get it here ASAP. Field is issued red flag. Contact was first the 48 of Alex Bowman getting into the back of William Byron, and then collected a handful of cars. Daniel Suarez is among those affected. Denny Hamlin. Brad Keselowski. Joey Logano. Many more.

No fewer than 12 cars will be seriously affected here. With the red flag, there still remain eight laps to run, though after they re-fire the engines, and run a couple of yellow-flag laps, we’ll be in a sprint to the finish for sure.

Lap 190: Ten laps to go! Chastain moves inside to block that line, and now Logano is back leading the top line. But then Chastain moves up and blocks there. He’s all about playing defense right now!

Lap 187: With 13 to go, the three-wide racing at the front has picked up... So many drivers with legit chances to take this thing. Two Hendrick cars have muscled their way to the front, with Byron and Bowman together.

Lap 184: After all the pit stops, no major mistakes, but the Chevy group has a far quicker stop, and the last cars to pit are now the cars in front. Ross Chastain is the lead car now, in front of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Daniel Suarez.

Lap 180: Toyotas pit after 179, and Fords are in at 180, including the leader, Joey Logano. Final green-flag pits, and we watch for any mistakes

Lap 175: Dale Jarrett was the last Daytona 500 winner to win from the pole back in 2000. Joey Logano is there now, after winning the pole this week... History coming? Logano leads a line in front of David Ragan and Brad Keselowski. Logano led 31 laps when he won this race last. He’s led 41 tonight.

Lap 165: The bottom line surges, with pole-sitter Joey Logano at the front of the line! Ford brother David Ragan on his bumper in second and Brad Keselowski in third. Denny Hamlin still leads the outside line, but they’ve lagged back a bit.

Lap 152: Power move from Denny Hamlin to the front of the outside lane. He’s a Toyota alone among a bunch of Chevys. Christopher Bell is the next Toyota back in 6th position. Kyle Busch is leading the bottom lane with Bowman on his bumper.

Lap 150: After dropping to the back of the pack with a penalty, Daniel Suarez has moved back up to 23rd of 31 drivers on the lead lap. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch and Corey Lajoie are trading the lead at the front of their respective lines. The outside line led by Lajoie is currently the better of the two.

Lap 140: And Wallace shuffles back to ninth as the lines now start to battle back and forth. AL Allmendinger listed as leader for the moment.

Lap 139: Bubba Wallace to the front. To update the earlier post on Busch, he left pit road too quickly and his lug nut was not fastened properly, so he limped around the track and back to pit road. He managed to stay on the lead lap, though.

Lap 133: Something’s up with Kyle Busch’s left front tire. He’s been having a strong day and just came in fourth in Stage 2. Daniel Suarez, who finished the stage in fourth, will go the rear for equipment interference.

Lap 131: The Top 10 following Stage 2: Ryan Blaney, Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez, Kyle Busch, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, Bubba Wallace, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., AJ Allmendinger and Chris Buescher.

Stage 2

Lap 130: What a pass by Ryan Blaney! The NASCAR Cup Series’ defending champion races past Austin Cindric on Turn 4 and wins Stage 2.

Lap 128: Two to go in Stage 2! Kyle Busch passes Austin Cindric for the lead. Ryan Blaney is making a push behind Cindric.

Lap 118: Austin Cindric moves into the lead at the Daytona 500! The 2022 race winner jumped out in front of Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. William Byron is in sixth and briefly cracked the top-five for the first time today.

Lap 115: The sun is starting to set here in Daytona Beach, and it’s turned out to be a beautiful afternoon and evening. As the lights get brighter, Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Austin Cindric are running in the lead with 15 laps to go in Stage 2.

Lap 112: There he is! Anthony Alfredo, a 24-year-old driver, briefly moved into third before falling back to 16th.

Lap 111: Ryan Preece receives a penalty for speeding entering pit road. He’d been running in third, nicely recovering from being involved in the early wreck.

Lap 110: We’ve had a good stretch of green flag racing here in Stage 2, and now some cars are starting to head down pit road. Kyle Busch, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Preece, Ryan Blaney and Todd Gilliland are running in the top five.

Lap 94: The field is starting to catch up to Michael McDowell, running five laps down with a mechanical issue. During Stage 1, AJ Allmendinger was running by himself on the opposite side of the track from the rest of the field, and for a stretch, was running laps significantly faster than the drivers in the front of the pack.

Your Top 10 at the moment: Todd Gilliland, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Justin Haley, Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, Austin Cindric, Chris Buescher, Brad Keselowski and Josh Berry.

Lap 84: After the bulk of the field, which is currently led by Joey Logano and Justin Haley, Jimmie Johnson and Michael McDowell are running well behind. Johnson, driving the No. 84 for Legacy Motor Club, was involved in a seven-car wreck during the first six laps.

Lap 83: Michael McDowell, who spent some time toward the front in Stage 1, indicated on his radio eariler that he had a problem. The 34 car has fallen all the way back in the field. Logano, Haley, Gilliland and Buescher lead.

Lap 80: Joey Logano, who started on the pole, is running with the lead over Justin Haley. Chris Buescher and Kyle Busch are behind as most of the field remains bunched together early in Stage 2.

Lap 70: Green for Stage 2! Kyle Larson, Josh Berry, Todd Gilliland and Denny Hamlin are in the front two rows early.

Lap 67: Most cars head down pit road under the first stage break caution. Your Top 10 after Stage 1: Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, Alex Bowman, William Byron, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace, Martin Truex Jr. and Daniel Suarez.

Stage 1

Lap 65: Chase Elliott wins Stage 1! It’s his second stage win at the Daytona 500. Chevrolets lead the front after Stage 1, as Elliott is pushed to the stage win by his Hendrick teammates Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman.

Lap 64: Getting to the final lap of Stage 1! Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson and William Byron lead.

Lap 60: The classic decision: Do you want to try and win Stage 1 and potentially sacrifice your chances of winning the race, or head down pit road and risk losing those stage points? More pit stops have been made late in Stage 1. David Ragan has moved into the race lead, followed by Ryan Preece — who’s reached the front after spinning earlier — Kyle Busch and William Byron.

Lap 57: Following those pit stops, Noah Gragson, Todd Gilliland, Josh Berry and Justin Haley — all Fords — are running in the lead. Many of the Chevrolets pitted, including Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch.

Lap 54: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., last year’s race winner, and Denny Hamlin make pit stops for fuel with 11 laps left in Stage 1. More come behind them. Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch keep leading.

Lap 45: Josh Berry, now driving the No. 4 Ford, moved into the lead and was passed by Chase Elliott. Kyle Busch, Bubba Wallace and Martin Truex Jr. move to the front of the pack.

Lap 42: Chase Elliott surges to the front row and is battling Michael McDowell to the lead. A Chevrolet has yet to lead this race, which has been controlled mainly by pole-sitter Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney (Fords), along with Christopher Bell (Toyota).

Lap 39: There they go! Joey Logano, Austin Cindric and Ryan Blaney all head down pit road. Christopher Bell and Daniel Hemric follow. Michael McDowell leads with Denny Hamlin very close.

Lap 37: It’s been the same Top 10 since the seven-car wreck involving Jimmie Johnson, but the front is starting to shake up a bit. Ryan Blaney leading, Joey Logano moves into second and former Daytona 500 winners Austin Cindric and Michael McDowell move into third and fourth, respectively. Many of these cars in the front have yet to pit and will have to soon.

Lap 30: Good period of green flag racing here, not to jinx it. Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney continue leading, followed by Joey Logano and Daniel Hemric in the second row. Meanwhile, AJ Allmendinger has been running well behind the entire field after a pass-through for not lining up properly on an earlier restart but has speed.

Lap 15: Jimmie Johnson has met minimum speed and cleared the DVP clock. Austin Dillon met minimum speed but is getting work done on his race car in the garage. Carson Hocevar and Kaz Grala have been evaluated and released from the care center, in addition to Burton.

Lap 11: We’re green again! Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney lead, followed by pole-sitter Joey Logano and Daniel Hemric. Harrison Burton is out of the infield care center. Hocevar and Grala are also done for the day.

Lap 10: Jimmie Johnson was in the early crash. Keselowski bumped Nemechek, which sent Harrison Burton and Carson Hocevar spinning and caused the multi-car wreck. Burton and Hocevar spun back onto the track and made contact with a number of drivers including Austin Dillon, Kaz Grala, Ryan Preece and Johnson. The race remains under caution.

Lap 5: Carnage early! Seven cars involved. Brad Keselowski initially made contact with John Hunter Nemechek. Carson Hocevar is done for the day.

Green flag, 4:34 p.m.: The Daytona 500 is underway. Let’s go racing!

4:19 p.m.: “In the spirit of America, and in the spirit of our great country. Finally, The Rock says: ‘Drivers! Start your engines!” — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Engines are fired. Cars are on the track. Almost time for racing!

3:35 p.m.: Some timing info for today, from NASCAR: Driver introductions begin now. The invocation will be at 4:05 p.m. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will give command at 4:18, before the green flag is waved at 4:30 p.m.

The Xfinity Series season opener will begin an hour following the end of the Daytona 500, roughly 9 p.m. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the race was moved from Monday morning because of rain.

3:25 p.m.: Some pre-race reading from Daytona:

Richard Petty recently spoke with Scott Fowler about life, death and racing.

Shane Connuck took a look back at NASCAR’s history in both Charlotte and Daytona Beach.

Hendrick Motorsports is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and Kyle Larson, Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick discuss what makes the team special — and the Daytona 500 victory that continues to elude them.

Winning at Daytona is the most prestigious for many drivers — this year’s purse will pay the winner more than $28 million — but not a single Daytona 500 winner in the last 10 years has gone on to win the Cup championship.

2:45 p.m.: NASCAR waited until Monday to hold the Great American Race, and it already seems more than worth the wait. It’s a beautiful day here in Daytona Beach, currently bright and sunny at 61 degrees. It’s a bit windy — gusts up to 16 mph right now — but no rain in the forecast, as was the case all weekend.

1:30 p.m.: We’re roughly three hours away from the green flag for NASCAR’s biggest race! Although the Daytona 500 is technically listed with a 4 p.m. start time, in reality the green flag should drop at around 4:30 p.m. The weather — finally — is clear. It’s sunny and breezy.

Current odds for the Daytona 500

Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin are currently the favorites, each at +900 odds on Hard Rock Bet. Kyle Busch (+1200), Ryan Blaney (+1200) and Brad Keselowski (+1300) round out the top five.

Last year, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., of JTG Daugherty Racing, was a +3000 longshot on DraftKings. Hard Rock Bet, Florida’s only legal sportsbook that recently became an official partner of Daytona International, has a number of specials for the Daytona 500, including +100 odds that a driver from Hendrick, JGR or Penske wins the race.

Predictions for the Daytona 500

So, who are we picking to win this race? Shane Connuck is picking Daniel Suarez. The Trackhouse Racing driver is due for a big win, and there’s no better time for one than at the Daytona 500. Suarez, who will start 13th in Monday afternoon’s race, looks to win his second Cup race of all time.

As the past three Daytona 500s have yielded particularly unexpected winners — Michael McDowell’s first Cup win on that stage in 2021, Austin Cindric as a rookie and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. emerging victorious last year — this could be Suarez’s turn to etch his name in NASCAR history books with his second career victory.

Scott Fowler is picking Logano, the pole winner and a veteran who knows how to navigate Daytona’s unique challenges.
