Daytona Beach homeless veterans have a new place to get off the street and regroup

DAYTONA BEACH — After two years of planning and hard work, the new Barracks of Hope veterans transitional housing on Derbyshire Road held its grand opening Friday afternoon.

The 8,500-square-foot complex of newly renovated church buildings will provide 20 veterans with their own efficiency-style apartment that's furnished and has a private bathroom. The facility, which will replace the Barracks of Hope shelter on Segrave Street, was made possible by a $1 million county government grant and a $1 million Veterans Administration grant.

Friday's celebration and grand opening drew dozens of people including veterans, local and VA officials, and U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, a former Green Beret and combat-decorated veteran.

The newly renovated facility is in Daytona Beach's Derbyshire neighborhood south of LPGA Boulevard and west of Nova Road. The housing can accommodate 20 veterans, and each will have a small apartment.
