Daytona spring break 2023: What colleges are coming and when?

DAYTONA BEACH   —  With Bike Week visitors about to put the World's Most Famous Beach in the rearview mirror, expect the tourist demographic to become much younger over the next few weeks, as college students on spring break head toward Daytona Beach and other sun-drenched destinations.

In the student realm, colleges and universities nationwide will be on a staggered schedule of spring break holidays that started the weekend of March 4 and runs through March 25, said Scott Edwards, manager at Daytona Welcome Center, a company that has booked Daytona Beach spring breakers for decades.

During that period, the heaviest week of student spring break influx is expected to start on Saturday, March 11, and run through March 18, Edwards said. It's also worth noting that students in Volusia County Schools also are on spring break starting March 13 with Flagler students on holiday the following week.

In the college realm, Edwards doesn't expect this year's influx to match numbers in recent years.

"Next week will be the busiest week, but the numbers will be down compared with last year," said Edwards, who attributes that prediction to the damages left behind at some beachside hotels and condominiums from back-to-back tropical storms Ian and Nicole.

"There are hotels and timeshare resorts that are completely closed, so inventory is down," he said, "Some of the hotels that are open have no swimming pools or pool decks or access to the ocean right now."

At the same time, students already are arriving, judging from their presence in check-out lines at area grocery and convenient stores.
