DC Auto Show 2020: Kia, Toyota, Honda take home best overall value awards

Kia has the best-valued three-row SUV, compact car and minivan in 2020, according to new rankings from U.S. News.

On Thursday, the publication revealed its annual list of "Best Cars for The Money," which spotlights the cars, SUVs and minivans with the overall best value based on several criteria. The announcement comes ahead of its awards show set to take place at the Washington, D.C., Auto Show.

Kia was the most-crowned car brand in four out of 11 automotive categories including "Best Compact Car” and “Best Subcompact SUV.” Toyota took home three wins, including one for its Corolla Hybrid.

Honda won two, and Chevrolet and Hyundai tied with one award each.

“Every Best Car for the Money winner is a pleasure to own and a good value overall,” said Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of U.S. News Best Cars.

Quality, safety and reliability data were taken into consideration to determine each car's overall score. Each vehicle's value was determined by real-time transaction prices provided by TrueCar, along with the total cost of ownership spanning five years.

“Cars with low price tags aren’t always good values,” said Deaton. “A cheap car can have high ownership costs, making it more expensive in the long run. Plus, a lot of inexpensive cars don’t give you a great ownership experience; it’s not a good deal if it’s not a good car."
