DC Water issues boil water advisory

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — DC Water issued a boil water advisory for some customers around the District Friday.

DC Water said on Friday afternoon, it received multiple calls from customers in Northwest D.C. reporting low or no water pressure at all. DC Water assessed the system and found that it was impacting multiple locations.

DC Water said the loss of pressure could result in the possibility for bacteria or other disease-causing organisms to enter the water through cracks, breaks or joints in the distribution system.

Crews were still working to investigate the cause and restore the system pressure.

In the meantime, impacted customers should:

  • Discard any beverages and ice made before Friday at 11 a.m.

  • Run cold water until it is clear, prior to boiling it.

  • Run cold water for two minutes if known sources of lead are present prior to boiling.

  • Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute and let it cool.

  • Store cooled water in a clean, covered container.

Boiled water that has been cooled or bottled water should be used for:

  • Drinking

  • Brushing your teeth

  • Preparing for and cooking food

  • Washing fruits and vegetables

  • Preparing infant formula

  • Making ice

  • Giving water to pets
