DCG hoops take down Indianola, Jahangir wins Ogden tourney

It was a light week but Dallas Center-Grimes still found the spotlight. (Note: Events covered Jan. 1-7)

Girls Basketball (10-1)

Coming back from the winter break — two weeks since their 55-20 win over Norwalk — the Mustangs didn’t miss a beat back in the heat of the Little Hawkeye, as DCG crushed Indianola (2-8) on the road by a score of 63-30.

Vanessa Bickford worked at will all night, leading the team with 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the hat trick. Devon Carlile chipped in 10 points as well for a season-high mark.

Beyond the offense’s success, holding Indianola to just 30 points drove the defense’s points allowed to just 36.3 points per game and was the fifth game of the season DCG held a team to 30 points or less — ranked fourth in Class 4A. The team is still ranked No. 1 in the latest state poll.

DCG’s momentum was only slowed by the winter storm that postponed Tuesday’s game at Pella Christian (3-7) to Jan. 18.

Boys Basketball (6-2)

After two losses to end 2023, the Mustangs jumped back into the win column with a 65-51 takedown on the road against Indianola (0-7) but it didn’t come without a scare.

The Indians have struggled all season and have yet to pick up a win. Leading 13-11 after one quarter, it was the first time this season the they held a lead after more than eight minutes of play.

But the jets turned on after the first buzzer, with Jackson Green erupting for a team-high 18 points and four steals. He currently leads the team with an average of 16 points per game. Helping create opportunities for the team, Jaden Jones logged seven assists to cushion his state-leading 6.8 assists per game in Class 4A.

The Mustangs were spared from any cancellations as they spent Saturday afternoon at the Benton Community Invitational where the team sat in seventh place of 15 attending schools.

Making his way to the first place mat after a clutch 1-0 semifinals win, Blake Forrester (120 pounds) went 2-1 for the day to take second place following a major decision loss to West Delaware’s Brayden Maury (21-2 overall). Forrester improved to 14-3 on the season, tied for the third-most wins on DCG’s roster.

Ryan Pertzsch (285) holds a 15-9 record after winning four straight in the consolation bracket after a first round exit, ending up in third place. Avery Van Zelderen (106) is tied in total wins with a 15-7 record but was sent to fifth place with a 3-2 mark for the day.

With a three-week break, Dallas Center was back on the floor Saturday in Ogden. The crew placed sixth of 27 registered teams.

Asia Jahangir (130 pounds) rose to the top with a perfect outing after pinning all three of her opponents, with the longest taking just 3 minutes 57 seconds. She was joined by Bella Mulder (135) and Halley Beaudet (190) on podium with third place finishes.
