Dallas Center-Grimes entered the new month with a couple of big wins and performances this week. (Note: Events covered Nov. 28-Dec. 4)

Boys Basketball (2-0)

Opening up the Little Hawkeye schedule, the Mustangs torched Grinnell (0-1) with a 71-39 win on Thursday, marking the third-straight game DCG has scored at least 70 points against the Wildcats.

Behind that explosive offensive performance, Jonathan Howard led the team with 20 points after hitting 4-of-8 three-point tries. Hudson Ehlert (12 points), Jaden Jones (9) and Jackson Green (9) also made impressions with good ball distribution led by Tate Perrin’s six assists. Jones was also handy with five dishes. And in total, DCG had 21 assists- nearly more than Grinnel’s shot attempts altogether.

DCG’s game on Nov. 29 wasn’t quite as breezy, narrowly winning 48-46 against ADM (1-2) but it was enough to keep the seven-game win streak against the Tigers intact.

Ehlert was at the top of DCG’s call sheet with 18 points while Calix Cahill recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds (DCG’s next-closest rebounder had just three boards).

Girls Basketball (3-1)

The Mustangs were rolling on all cylinders in their last two games, running ADM (3-2) and Grinnell (1-3) out of the gym with a pair of double-digit wins.

Closing November in ADM on the 29th, Dallas Center routed the Tigers with a 52-30 win in a game that was owned by Mustangs from the tipoff. DCG went on a 16-2 run in the first quarter and never looked back. Aubrey Johansen seemingly had all the answers to the test ahead of the game as she went up for 16 points while missing just one shot, often getting fastbreak opportunities on her team-leading for steals.

Friday’s game against Grinnell didn’t sizzle as rapidly, instead turning into a slow boil with Emma Miner taking the lead with 15 points and seven rebounds, closely followed by Vanessa Bickford who was good on 5-of-7 shots and six assists. Sydney Miller also played a big role with four offensive rebounds to help create second-chance opportunities for the team’s leading scorers.

Boys Wrestling

Hosting 13 teams at the Andy Davidson DCG Mustang Invite on Saturday, Dallas Center came in third place by the slimmest of margins. Creston came in first place with 215 points and was followed by Webster City’s 191.5 points, and 191 points from the Mustangs.

Giving the biggest boost to DCG’s status was a trio of first-place winners between Brayden Crosser (126 pounds), Logan Gard (138) and Jacob Fistler (170) who are all 5-0 on the season after winning all four of their matches Saturday afternoon.

Fistler and Gard each earned a high-profile win after defeating state tournament participants in their first-place matches. Fistler won a 15-0 tech fall against West Marshall’s Austin Pfantz while Gard took down Ankeny Centennial’s Cael Wiener in a methodical 3-2 decision.

Also competing in title matches, Ayden Beck (113) and Ben Brushaber (182) each took second place for the Mustangs after losing their first match of the season in the final round.

Girls Wrestling

After a couple of early appearances, the Mustangs’ next scheduled appearance* comes Monday at Saydel.

*Tuesday’s meet with Norwalk was held after publishing this week’s edition.
