DDCC Storm basketball's Uzziah Dawkins earns 4-year scholarship to hometown college

Another member of Davidson-Davie Community College's two-time national finalist men's basketball team has signed to play at a four-year program.

Uzziah "Zy" Dawkins, a Spartanburg, South Carolina, native and 6-foot-2 guard, signed last week to play basketball at Converse, an NCAA Division II college located in Dawkins' hometown.

He joins Storm teammates Javeon Jones and LJ Rogers who signed with Catawba and Lees-McRae, respectively, earlier this summer.

“Zy had a big-time year for the 2022-2023 DDCC men’s basketball team that won both the Region 10 regular season, District 7 championship and finished with an overall record of 33-3," DDCC coach Matt Ridge said.

The Storm made it to a second straight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national championship game last season and won their 14th regular-season conference title in 16 seasons.

Dawkins, who transferred to DDCC from Erskine, ran the offense.

"Zy was our starting point guard and was the engine that made our high octane offense run," Ridge said. "Zy’s commitment to film and working on his game outside of practice helped separate himself from other guards he competed against."

Among Dawkins' highlights this season were multiple games with five or more 3-pointers, including a 5-for-6 showing from beyond the arc in a national semifinal win over Sullivan CC.

"Converse is getting a big-time leader and incredible person. We will miss Zy at DDC but excited for him and his future at Converse College.  He will always be a part of our Storm Basketball Family,” Ridge said.

Dawkins was an all-region team member his junior and senior seasons at Spartanburg High. He went on to average 6.6 points and 2.1 boards as a freshman at Erskine before transferring to Davidson-Davie CC. In one season with the Storm, Dawkins started 34 of 36 games, averaging 7.7 points, 3.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 19.9 minutes while shooting 41.2% from the field and 60.8% from the line.
