Dead & Company first teased a Cornell show in late February with a social media post that included “5.8.23” and a graphic that resembled Cornell branding and a design similar to the illustration on the Dead's live release of the May 8, 1977 concert.

On March 2, Dead & Company confirmed the show via social media. The Final Tour 2023 kicks off May 6 in New Orleans, with stops in Saratoga Springs and New York City.

Dead & Company includes Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, and guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir. John Mayer helps front the band as guitarist and vocalist, along with bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Jay Lane has helped fill in as a percussionist during Kreutzmann's recent health issues.

Yes or No?Was ’77 Grateful Dead show the best ever?

“Cornell 1977 holds a special place in Grateful Dead lore. That magical night lives forever and will always link Cornell and the Grateful Dead,” said drummer Mickey Hart. “On that fateful night in 1977, my wife Caryl was a student at Cornell but missed that performance. Many twists and turns later, we wind up once again at Cornell to celebrate that 1977 performance with a benefit concert at Barton Hall. If anyone finds some of my old brain cells that I lost back in ’77 in Barton Hall, please advise.”

The Dead also played Barton Hall in 1980 and 1981, but the 1977 show is considered one of the band's best. The show was attended by about 8,500 fans and was later archived in the Library of Congress.

In honor of the show's 40th anniversary in 2017, the Tompkins County legislature issued a proclamation declaring May 8 as Grateful Dead Day in the county. Commemorations of the show include a book published by Cornell University Press and an annual Cornell Chimemasters concert of Dead songs.

Another Grateful Dead offshoot, Furthur, which featured Weir and original bassist Phil Lesh, played at Barton Hall in 2010.
