Dead Whale Missing Chunks of Flesh Washes Up on Australian Beach

The carcass of a humpback whale missing big chunks of flesh was found washed ashore on beach in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, on June 23.

Jonathan Dekeghel said he encountered the carcass at Smoky Cape beach as he went for a morning swim, and believed it may have collided with a propeller.

“It looks like it’s been hit by a boat,” said Dekeghel, as he shot this video showing a large wound on the whale’s right flank. “And then the sharks have had a go at it,” he added.

“I have never seen a whale washed up like this before,” Dekeghel told Storyful, adding that he believed it had only just come ashore. “The sharks were still near, out in the waves,” he said.

Dekeghel described the encounter as “very confronting” and “quite surreal.”

According to a local media, local officials later removed the whale from the beach, transporting it on the back of a semi-trailer. Credit: Jonathan Dekeghel via Storyful
