Deadline to apply for Staunton's vacant city council seat is on Friday. Have you applied?

STAUNTON — As Staunton City Council gets set for a jam-packed work session and meeting on Thursday evening, there is still a lingering question about how the vacant seat left by former mayor Andrea Oakes' resignation will be filled.

As part of their work session prior to their regular meeting, council will likely hammer out the logistics of when interviews will take place to fill the vacancy, but applications are still open for residents who wish to apply.

In order to apply, an individual must be a qualified voter in Staunton who has been a resident of Virginia for at least a year and a resident of Staunton for at least 30 days. Whoever council chooses to fill that seat will do so until a special election this November, where city residents will elect a new member to fulfill the remainder of Oakes' term.

The application form can be filled out on the city's website or obtained by downloading the PDF from the city's website or by visiting the city manager's office at City Hall. Whether applying online or with a hard copy, applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan 27 to the Clerk of Council Kiley Kesecker.

For questions about qualification, you can contact the general registrar at 540-332-3840. For other questions relating to the application process, you can contact Kesecker at 540-332-3810.
