Deadline pushed to end of 2023 for property tax, rent rebates

Jun. 12—HARRISBURG — Pennsylvanians eligible for the Property Tax and Rent Rebate program have until Dec. 31 to apply for benefits under a deadline extended by the Department of Revenue.

The Revenue Department determined enough program funds are available to extend the application period beyond the June 30 statutory deadline, according to an announcement released Monday. Approximately 400,000 people are estimated to be eligible.

Expanding program eligibility is a primary focus of Gov. Josh Shapiro this budget season. Proposals are under consideration that would raise income limits and maximum payouts, however, any potential changes wouldn't impact the program until 2024.

The governor's office estimates an additional 175,000 people would benefit should his plan be enacted.

As it stands, the program is open to senior citizens, those who are widowed and age 50 or older, and adults with disabilities. The annual income limit is $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters. Maximum standard payouts are $650 but can jump to $975 with qualifying supplemental benefits.

Claimants are encouraged to file applications online at mypath.pa.gov. Check the status of a claim using the "Where's My Rebate?" tool within myPATH.

Paper applications and detailed instructions are available on the program page at www.revenue.pa.gov. Help is available through Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers and the offices of state senators and representatives.
