Sacramento man, 42, killed in Highway 50 crash wasn’t wearing seat belt, CHP says

A Sacramento man was killed in a crash Wednesday morning on eastbound Highway 50 along the W-X portion of the freeway.

The incident involved a single vehicle colliding into the center divider near 16th Street around 5:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento Office said in a social media post.

The CHP said the driver of a 2012 Audi sedan, described as a 42-year-old Sacramento man, was traveling at unknown speed when the vehicle suddenly veered across all eastbound lanes and into the center divider wall.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, “struck the steering wheel and front windshield,” causing fatal injuries, the CHP wrote.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

Caltrans live traffic cameras showed multiple CHP vehicles and a flatbed tow truck near a dark-colored sedan with severe damage to its front end.

The vehicle was cleared and the left lane reopened shortly after 8 a.m., according to the CHP.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
