Deadly days on South Jersey roads claim five lives

MANSFIELD - A South Jersey man died in a chain-reaction accident on the New Jersey Turnpike here.

Lawrence Orlando, 24, of Millville, was a passenger in one of three vehicles involved in collisions around 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, said New Jersey State Police.

According to a police account, Orlando was in a Honda that struck another car while both were northbound on the turnpike near milepost 49.7.

The Honda became disabled, and was struck by a northbound SUV, said New Jersey State Police.

The three drivers sustained minor injuries, but Orlando died after being taken to an area hospital.

Also on Dec. 27, a Pennsylvania resident died in a head-on crash that closed a Harrison Township road for about four hours.

Monir Lancaster, 38, of Chester, was fatally injured around 4:30 p.m. on Stephen M. Sweeney Way, also called the Mullica Road bypass, near Theresa Drive.

Lancaster's westbound car veered into the eastbound lane and struck a pickup truck driven by a Glassboro resident, according to township police.

The second motorist sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

In other local accidents, James Rodriguez, 27, of Minotola, died when his vehicle struck trees off the Black Horse Pike in Hamilton, Atlantic County, around 11:58 p.m. Dec. 23.

Two fatal accidents occurred one day earlier.

A 5:45 a.m. crash killed a passenger who was ejected from a vehicle after a crash on Route 130 South near Terrace Avenue, according to Camden County Police.

The one-car accident occurred near the city's border with Pennsauken.

The victim's name was not released due to a pending investigation, police said.

The driver, described as alert and conscious, was taken to a local hospital.

In Westampton, a pedestrian was fatally struck on Route 541 around 5:40 p.m.

Additional details were not available from police in Camden and Westampton.
