Deadly weekend: 4 killed in 2 crashes

Last week was a deadly one on Anderson County and Roane County's roads, with four people killed in two separate crashes.

Three Ohio residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash in the Claxton Community on Friday. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary report, killed were 75-year-old Peter Webel, the driver, and passengers Linda Webel, 76, and Freida Gottschling, 80, all of Mansfield, Ohio.

A 2004 GMC Sonoma driven by a Knoxville juvenile was traveling westbound on Edgemoor Road at 9:27 p.m. Friday when it struck the 2018 Honda CRV, driven by Peter Webel in its driver's side. The CRV was turning onto Edgemoor Road at Old Emory Road to travel eastbound.

The CRV came to rest on its roof, the report stated. It also stated that both of the Webels were wearing a seatbelt, but Gottschling was not.

No other information on the juvenile driver was given in the report. Charges are pending, according to the report.

Roane County

John Day, 75, of Kingston, was killed in a two-vehicle crash at 4:03 p.m. Saturday on River Road in Roane County.

According to the THP report, a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Hayden Letner, 64, of Ten Mile, was driving northbound on River Road and a 1999 Harley Davidson 20C motorcycle, driven by Day, was driving southbound.

Letner was attempting to make a left turn into the parking lot of Renfro's gas station, when Day's motorcycle hit the Cherokee.

Day was wearing a helmet and Letner was wearing seatbelts, according to the report.
