DUNEDIN — In Dean Cain’s new movie, lasers shoot from a superhero’s eyes, but the actor best known for being Superman in the series “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” is not playing that character.

Beck, a Belgian Malinois from Plant City, has the title role of R.A.D.A.R. in “R.A.D.A.R.: Adventures of the Bionic Dog,” which was shot in Dunedin in April 2022.

But, in the movie’s trailer released last week, Cain is front and center as the mayor of Dunedin.

“R.A.D.A.R.: Adventures of the Bionic Dog” is about a mad scientist who invents a “Remote Activated Doubloon Acquiring Rex” dog to find pirate treasure off the coast of Florida. But the dog develops emotions, befriends a boy and girl and helps them find gold needed to save their small town. It’s “Goonies” but with a robotic dog.

The mad scientist, Dr. Van Hook, played by St. Petersburg’s Paul Wilson, and his crony, played by Tampa’s Ricky Wayne, seek to capture the dog and steal the treasure from the children.

In the trailer, the film has a “Home Alone” vibe, with the bionic dog using robotic powers to escape the bumbling Dr. Van Hook. R.A.D.A.R.’s abilities displayed in the trailer are laser eyes, a sonic boom bark, a tail that doubles as a propeller so that the dog can fly, text messaging, invisibility and emitting knock-out gas through flatulence.

According to IMDB.com, the family movie is scheduled for a June 27 streaming and DVD release.
