Dean McDermott Gets Candid: Sex, Fatherhood & Parenting Struggles

In a candid new interview, Dean McDermott discussed sex, fatherhood and parenting struggles — and what he had to say about how he keeps it hot with Tori Spelling is worth a listen. After all, the Daddy Issues podcast host and his wife have been married for 15 years and have six kids together so, clearly, they’ve figured out a few things about turning chemistry into longevity.

During a visit to Local Now’s Mom Life with Adrianna Costa, McDermott’s podcast co-hosts Nicky Paris and Adam Hunter told Costa that Spelling has been their favorite guest so far. Why? Because they loved seeing the palpable attraction between McDermott and his wife, a decade of marriage and a veritable gaggle of children later. And while McDermott was quick to confirm “it’s still on,” he did point out that nurturing that chemistry takes work.

“You have to have date nights. You have to make it a priority to spend time together because you spend so much time focused on your kids, you forget about each other and each other’s needs,” McDermott said, sharing a few simple ways to show affection. “Just grabbing your husband or your wife out of nowhere, for no reason, and just kissing the nape of her neck and saying, ‘I love you so much, you’re so beautiful.’ Just being appreciated. Saying, ‘You’re beautiful, you’re handsome.’ Just looking in their eyes.”

Of course, McDermott is realistic that cultivating that connection gets more difficult as your family grows. “It’s so easy to throw it in the back, but you’ve got to bring it to the forefront,” he said. And if the degree of difficulty that comes with connecting after kids increases with each new addition, McDermott and Spelling definitely have to put in some work — they’re parents to Liam, 12, Stella, 11, Hattie, 8, Finn, 7, and Beau, 2. They also co-parent McDermott’s 21-year-old son Jack Montgomery with McDermott’s ex-wife, Mary Jo Eustace.

So, for as much as McDermott focuses on his marriage, he’s equally as invested in his kids. That’s the whole premise of their podcast, he told Mom Life‘s Costa. “We’re really coming the perspective of dads are more hands-on now than they ever were, so have that kind of knowledge now,” he explained. “Before we didn’t, and we didn’t talk about what diapers to use or what formula to use — we weren’t around that much. But now the tide has changed, and we have this great platform to talk about being a dad.”
