New dean named for Washburn University School of Law

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn University (WU) has revealed the newest dean for its law school on Monday following a national search for someone to fill the position.

Jeffrey Jackson, the interim dean for WU’s School of Law, will take up the position of dean as of Feb. 26, 2024. He has served as interim dean for the school since the spring of 2022. He is recognized now as the 25th person to hold the position at WU.

“During the past two years, Dean Jackson has proven that he is a strong and thoughtful leader who deeply values the prestigious legacy of the Washburn School of Law and its importance to the legal communities we serve,” WU President Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek said. “Appointing an alumnus to lead the Washburn University School of Law gives this announcement special meaning. We are so proud of Jeff and his accomplishments, knowing the future of the Washburn School of Law could not be in better hands.”

Before stepping up to the position of interim dean at the school of law, Jackson was a professor of law and served as the director of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy with the school of law. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from WU in 1989 and graduated cum laude with a juris doctor from the school of law in 1992. He also holds an LL.M. in constitutional law from Georgetown University.

Prior to his time as a faculty member with WU’s school of law, Jackson served as a law clerk for Chief Justice Robert E. Davis on the Kansas Supreme Court and the Kansas Court of Appeals. He also spent time as a litigation associated with Bennett & Dillon law firm based out of Topeka.

“I am extremely honored to lead this talented group of faculty who are dedicated to innovation and teaching excellence, as demonstrated by our students’ high bar pass rates,” Jackson said. “Together, we will ensure that Washburn School of Law continues to adapt to the future while maintaining its commitment to student success and proud tradition of graduating practice-ready students.”
