Dean, Schulz break school records in 400-meter hurdles

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Caleb Dean and Sylvia Schulz broke the Texas Tech records in the 400-meter hurdles less than a half-hour apart Friday at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial track and field meet.

Dean won his event in 48.47 seconds, breaking the school record of 48.68 that Norman Grimes set at the 2019 NCAA championships. Dean joined Jamele Mason, Grimes and Malik Metivier as the only Tech men to break 49 seconds in the event.

The transfer from Maryland continued a strong debut season for the Red Raiders. During the indoor season, he won the Big 12 title and finished second in the NCAA championship in the 60-meter hurdles.

Schulz ran the 400 hurdles in 57.04, breaking the Tech women's record that Sandra Iwunze set with a 57.14 at the 2008 Big 12 meet. Her time was 13th overall and 10th among the collegiate hurdlers. Schulz is a South Africa native who moved from there to Germany at age 16 and then signed with Tech out of high school.

Tech's Zach Bradford won the men's pole vault by clearing 18 feet, 4 1/2 inches.

On Saturday, Terrence Jones won the 100 meters in a wind-legal 9.91 seconds, becoming the second Tech sprinter ever to break 10 seconds. The school record is 9.86 by Divine Oduduru.

Tech's Courtney Lindsey finished second behind Jones in 10.04. Running in a separate section, Tech's Don'Dre Swint ran a wind-legal 10.19 and finished 10th overall.

Jones also anchored the Red Raiders' 400-meter relay to third place in 38.60, the program's third-fastest run all-time. Adam Clayton, Lindsey and Swint ran the first three legs.

Tech's Rosemary Chukwuma got second in the women's 100 in a wind-assisted 10.85, and Demisha Roswell placed fourth in the women's 100-meter hurdles in a wind-assisted 13.00.

In the men's 800 meters, former South Plains College runner Mehdi Yanouri from Oklahoma State finished fifth in 1:46.96 and Tech's Marco Vilca took seventh in a personal record 1:47.09.

In the men's 110 hurdles, the Red Raiders' Taylor Rooney and Antoine Andrews ran wind-legal personal bests of 13.60 and 13.66, respectively, for fifth and sixth place.

Elsewhere Saturday at the Beach Invite hosted by Long Beach State, Tech's Kaithon McDonald tied for first and Caleb Wilborn tied for second, both topping out at 6-11.

Softball

Shaylon Govan started the scoring with a three-run homer and Ana Watson ended it with a grand slam as No. 18 Baylor outslugged Texas Tech 16-11 Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field, evening the three-game Big 12 series at one game apiece.

McKenzie Wilson and Sydney Collazos had three hits apiece, drove in three runs and combined to score seven as Baylor (33-10, 3-5) bounced back from a 10-8 loss the night before.

Arriana Villa went 3 for 3 with five runs batted in for Tech (29-16, 3-8), and Kailey Wyckoff finished 3 for 4 with four runs scored.

Villa's three-run homer in the third brought Tech within 8-5, and Wyckoff's solo smash in the fourth tied it 8-8. It was 11-11 in the sixth after Villa hit a sacrifice fly and Demi Elder an RBI single, but the Bears scored five in the seventh, all off Sage Hoover (14-2).

The two teams finish the series with a game at noon Sunday.

In Friday night's opener, Elder capped a six-run bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer, lifting Tech to a 10-8 triumph.

Tech trailed 8-4 after Baylor scored six runs of its own in the top of the sixth. A run-scoring triple by Wyckoff and a two-run homer by Ellie Bailey narrowed the gap to 8-7. After Alanna Barraza singled and Villa walked, Elder greeted reliever RyLee Crandall with a drive over the center-field wall.

The homer, Tech's third of the game, broke the single-season school record as the 67th. The 2012 team hit 66.

Barraza broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the third. Bailey has 14 home runs this season, Wyckoff nine and Barraza, Villa and Peyton Blythe eight apiece. Elder's homer was her fourth.

Govan and Amber Toven homered for Baylor, and Kaci West and Toven drove in two runs apiece.

Women's tennis

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Romanian freshman Andreea Lila got her first career Big 12 victory, helping Texas Tech shut out West Virginia 7-0 Friday.

Tech (14-8, 4-4) didn't lose a set. The teams of Avelina Sayfetdinova-Metka Komac and Yekaterina Dmitrichenko-Camryn Stepp secured the best-of-three doubles point for the Red Raiders.

In order from Nos. 1 through 6 singles, Tech's Olivia Peet, Sayfetdinova, Cristina Tiglea, Dmitrichenko, Komac and Lila dispatched their opponents in straight sets. West Virginia (11-9, 1-6) lost its sixth match in a row.

Tech closes the regular season with a road match at No. 12 Iowa State (15-4, 5-2) at noon Sunday.

Men's tennis

STILLWATER, Okla. — Dimitrios Azoidis beat Alessio Basile 6-4, 7-5 Friday, clinching a 4-0 victory for Texas Tech at Oklahoma State. It was the Red Raiders' first Big 12 win of the season.

Tech (13-9, 1-3) won the best-of-three doubles point with triumphs by the teams of Piotr Pawlak-Franco Ribero and Azoidis-Reed Collier. Then Ribero, Collier and Azoidis closed it out by winning Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles. It was the 50th career singles victory for Collier, a fifth-year senior from League City Clear Falls.

Tech concludes the regular season with a match at 1 p.m. Sunday at Oklahoma (13-9, 2-2). Oklahoma State (12-11, 0-4) hosts Baylor (16-14, 1-3) on Sunday in another regular-season finale.

Men's golf

PHOENIX — Ludvig Aberg tied for seventh individually and led No. 4 Texas Tech to eighth place out of 12 teams in Arizona State's Thunderbird Collegiate. The 54-hole tournament at Papago Golf Course concluded Saturday.

Aberg shot rounds of 71, 69 and 67 to finish 6 under par on the par-71 course. Tyran Snyders (69-72-70) tied for 20th at 2-under. Rounding out the Tech lineup were Matthew Comegys (70-74-73), Calum Scott (74-74-70) and Jack Wall (74-73-74).

Tech's Baard Skogen, entered as an individual medalist, finished sixth at 7-under. The big Norwegian closed with a 5-under 66 round Saturday after shooting 68-72 in Friday's first 36 holes.

No. 3 Arizona State shot 28-under to win by one stroke over No. 16 Arizona and by eight over No. 2 North Carolina. Then came No. 20 Oklahoma State at 17-under, SMU at 6-under and No. 13 Texas and Oregon State at 4-under.
