Death in Paradise showrunners Tony Jordan and Tim Key have discussed the possibility of a crossover with spin-off series Beyond Paradise.

The latter, which premieres on February 24, sees Kris Marshall reprise his role as DI Humphrey Goodman as he tackles crimes in Devon.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, Jordan revealed that he wanted Beyond Paradise to forge its own identity to begin with, but didn’t rule out the two shows colliding in the future.

“We're not going to tell you what's already in the works! We know what the Death in Paradise audience likes, but it's also important to us that Beyond Paradise stands in its own right,” he began.

“It's not just a little off-shoot of Death in Paradise and a little fluffy thing. It's actually a show with a real integrity to itself. We understand the Death in Paradise audience – we know that they really want to find out what happened to Humphrey and Martha.

“When we saw them walk off into the sunset, we all wondered how they were going to get on and how it was going to work,” he continued. “We're keen to give those treats where we can, but it's equally important to us that the show stands on its own.”

As opposed to Death in Paradise, which takes place in the tropical climate of Saint Marie, Beyond Paradise will be closer to home, with the town of Shipton Abbott serving as the base.

Key revealed the process behind deciding its South West setting, disclosing that it was one of the first subjects to tackle: “We'd left [Humphrey and Martha] in the UK [so] it made sense to pick it up again in the UK. We had some discussions very early doors about where that would be.

“I think it ties into a feeling of 'what is the DNA of the universe that we're building here? What makes it feel like a Death in Paradise show?'” he continued. “We knew that we needed it to be very beautiful – somewhere that felt a bit different and somewhere that had similarities to Saint Marie, but also had a personality and its own cultural history.

“Very quickly, South Western England – and Devon in particular – felt like the right fit,” he added. “We took it there and it was one of those things where once you make that decision, everything just starts to fall into place.”

Beyond Paradise launches on Friday, February 24 at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Death in Paradise series 12 airs on Friday nights on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
