Death in Paradise's Ben Miller has admitted that "it was the right time" to leave the show after two series as DI Richard Poole.

The BBC One crime drama is now approaching its ninth series, with a healthy cycle of stars populating the island of Saint-Marie over the years following Miller's exit.

Speaking to Digital Spy recently, the actor weighed in on his decision to move on back in 2014.

"It'd been a great ride and it felt like a good time to leave," Miller explained. "It was the right time. I think it's right for that show. It has a certain sort of rhythm to it."

Speaking of Death in Paradise's worldwide popularity, he went on: "I feel really proud [of it]. It's amazing because it's all over the world. Wherever you go now, there's people that watch it.

"And it's not easy to make something like that and I don't think anybody really knows why things catch a wind, catch a moment, they're not even aware of."

Miller isn't the only star to set sail from the idyllic island though – check out why the likes of Danny John-Jules and Kris Marshall also left their roles.

Death in Paradise returns to BBC One in January 2020.
