When your kid is about to get his or her first car, what you want to do is help your offspring choose the safest vehicle for the given budget. The Hooker family sure took that challenge seriously.
Kenan Hooker works as Hoonigan's production assistant. His dad is the stunt driver who happened to be the guy rolling the Chevy Nova in Death Proof, Quentin Tarantino's fantastic car movie. After filming ended, the fully-caged backup car built for the rollover stunt, called "The Jesus," was offered to the Hooker family for $500. It's one of four cars built for the movie, and the only one that ran good enough to do the driving scenes.
The other caged car, called "The Prius," was destroyed in spectacular fashion thanks to Mr. Hooker. But he pulled off the stunt on the first take, and since the backup car wasn't needed, the Nova was free to live another life, complete with its original vinyl wrap, cast rubber duck hood ornament (a nod to the 1978 movie Convoy), and a 350 small block that only ran on six instead of the full set.
Kenan bored it to 383 cubic inches and threw in enough go fast parts to make 425 horsepower at the wheels. Then, he used it as his daily driver all throughout high school, minus the plexiglass.
It only shows that some Death Proof Novas are more authentic than others. Namely, this one is the real deal.
