Death Valley access improving as more roads reopen; cycling events through Saturday

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The gravel road to Keane Wonder Mine in Death Valley National Park is expected to reopen on Monday. Access to Crater Mine and Eureka Dunes was restored on Thursday, park officials said.

The openings continue to restore access after August floods damaged infrastructure throughout the park. The park was closed until mid-October when crews reopened CA-190, the main road through the park.

Keane Wonder Mine is described as one of the most scenic historic mines in the park. “Wooden towers support an aerial tramway, with ore buckets dangling over a scenic canyon,” according to a Friday news release. “The two-wheel-drive gravel road will reopen by January 22.”

Big Pine-Death Valley Road connects Big Pine, California, to Ubehebe Crater Road, providing access to Crater Mine and Eureka Dunes.

Most of the park’s main roads are open, but many backcountry roads are still closed. Last week, the park reopened the Beatty Cutoff. Information is updated on the Death Valley National Park website as roads continue to reopen.

A cycling event on Friday and Saturday is expected to bring up to 200 cyclists into the park. on Friday, watch for cyclists between Furnace Creek and Harmony Borax Works . On Saturday, the event will run between Furnace Creek and Jubilee Pass (S. Badwater Road). “Please be courteous and pass with care,” officials said.
