European Council President Charles Michel arrived in Kyiv on Nov. 21, the tenth anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity or Euromaidan Revolution – the third top European official to arrive in the Ukrainian capital on an unannounced visit on the day.

“Good to be back in Kyiv – among friends,” Michel wrote on his X/Twitter account.

Earlier today, unannounced visits were made to the capital by the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

Nov. 21, 2013, marked the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity. The pro-Russian government led by PM Mykola Azarov ordered the halt of the preparation process for the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

Subsequently, former President Viktor Yanukovych halted Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration by declining to sign the agreement, prompting thousands of Ukrainians to take to the streets in protest.

The European Commission recommended initiating negotiations regarding Ukraine’s accession to the EU on Nov. 8, 2023.
