After decades in Cornelius, a foam manufacturer is closing with nearly 60 layoffs

A foam manufacturing company in the Charlotte area is closing and laying off dozens of employees.

FXI Inc. is permanently closing its facility at 18801 Old Statesville Road in Cornelius, resulting in about 59 job cuts, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed Monday with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The rolling layoffs will occur between May 22 and June 20.

“FXI’s Cornelius plant has experienced some very challenging times in recent months, which led us to analyze the business as a whole,” Courtney Damon, FXI chief human resources officer, told The Charlotte Observer on Thursday. “After that review, we determined that we had to take the necessary step of closing that facility.”

Employees were notified April 21, she said.

Just over a year ago, the FXI building caught fire. No injuries were reported.

The plant has been in operation for more than 26 years. FXI, formerly known at Foamex, has owned the 48-acre site since 1990, Mecklenburg County property records show.

FXI, based in Radnor, Pennsylvania, specializes in bedding and mattress products, as well as other areas including furniture, medical and transportation, according to the company’s website.

FXI and Innocor, both producers of polyurethane foam products, merged in 2019. As of 2020, FXI had 34 manufacturing and distribution facilities in North America with about 4,150 employees, according to the company. FXI was acquired by One Rock Capital Partners in 2017.
