Decatur man arrested in Arkansas after high-speed chase, wreck

Dec. 26—A Decatur man was arrested in Stone County, Arkansas, after a high-speed pursuit Friday that began with a routine traffic stop in that county, according to the Stone County Sheriff's Office.

Caleb Brady Gurley, 27, faces charges that include fleeing, aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. According to traffic citations, he in 2020 lived on East Moulton Street in Decatur.

At about 10 p.m. Friday, a Stone County deputy attempted a traffic stop on a 2010 Honda Civic, according to a statement by the Sheriff's Office. After briefly pulling to the right side of the roadway, the Civic fled at speeds reaching 90 mph, according to the statement. Various police departments were engaged in the pursuit, which eventually was headed by Arkansas State Police.

Gurley's vehicle evaded spike strips and entered adjoining Independence County, Arkansas, and ended "with the vehicle leaving the roadway and colliding into an embankment," the Sheriff's Office said.

Gurley and a female passenger were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the statement, and Gurley was later discharged and transported to the Stone County Detention Center.

Stone County is about 75 miles west of Memphis.
