DECC parking lot to hold free food giveaway Thursday

Feb. 25—Two large truckloads of food will be available for free Thursday at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

The food giveaway will start 11:30 a.m. and continue on until supplies run out, according to news release from the DECC. It's a first-come, first-served event.

The trucks will deliver 30-pound boxes of fresh food that will be available to anyone who wants them. That includes those from the surrounding region, DECC Interim Executive Director Roger Reinert said.

"Many thanks to our Duluth-area organized labor friends who have partnered to provide food for anyone in the community and surrounding region," Reinert said in the release. "We are thankful we have the space to provide a safe area for pick up."

Four organizations have partnered to put on the event: Duluth Building and Construction Trades Council, Northeast Area Labor Council, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1189 and the Saint Paul Regional Labor Federation.

Duluth Building and Construction Trades Council President Craig Olson said the event is a chance to provide food to neighbors.

"We're hoping for a great turnout so we can clear the trucks and get this food into homes," Olson said.
