Decision-makers put to test at Girl Scout luncheon: Samoas, LemonUps or Thin Mints?

Five accomplished award winners.

One self-made millionaire speaker.

And cookies!

The ninth annual Emerald Awards, a benefit for the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, had it all.

Especially the cookies. Two boxes of each kind piled up the middle of the table like an edible ziggurat.

Virginia Spencer was chairwoman for the luncheon, which took place May 13 at the Four Seasons Resort and honored women who bring new ideas to life, who demonstrate creative problem solving, and who bring innovation to their field of expertise or to the community.

The four women honored for embodying the characteristics of today’s G.I.R.L. — Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker and Leader — were Kathleen R. Crampton, Grace Kurian, Kim Jones, and Verdenia Baker, respectively.

Crampton is chairwoman of Floridians for National Popular Vote; Kurian is senior director of Information Technology- Nuclear at Florida Power & Light; Jones is CEO of Tropical Vibes LLC; and Baker is Palm Beach County Administrator.

Palm Beach resident Sharon Bush Murray received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Philanthropy.

The co-director of the Museum of Democracy was recognized for her desire to help others, which has translated into raising funds throughout her career for multiple organizations that serve disadvantaged women and children and at-risk families.

In addition to lunch and the awards presentation, the afternoon featured keynote speaker Kelley Higney.

Higney, founder and CEO of Bug Bite Thing (as seen on "Shark Tank") shared her story of success as a female entrepreneur.

Honorary chairwomen for the event were Geri Emmett, Donna Mulholland, Lois Pope and Pamela M. Rauch.

Host committee members were Kayla Campbell, Susan D. del Portal, Lynn Kirker, Samantha Marzke, Robin Mason, Melissa Mulvaney, Ofelia Utset and Marcia Wolf.

Proceeds will support outdoor programming and Girl Scout summer camp.
