Decorations made from more than 80,000 canned goods rise in Ventura for annual food drive

Thousands of cans of food headed to Food Share stopped first in downtown Ventura to serve as building blocks for colorful outdoor displays of trees, fire trucks and more.

The 11th annual CAN-tree food drive, organized by the regional food bank, filled Figueroa Plaza Thursday through Sunday. Businesses, county agencies, schools, families and organizations sponsored the canned-food decorations that will help feed the area's needy and vied for coveted prizes for their creative efforts.

With more than 80,000 cans collected, organizers expected to have 172 trees built.
