DEEP:81-year-oldwoman dies after falling into Hammonasset River while canoeing

Aug. 12—Healey said the woman, who was wearing a life jacket, was pulled from the water and transported to Middlesex Health Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook where she was pronounced dead. He said the woman's identity is being withheld as officials work to notify her family.

Healey said investigators believe the canoe, which was occupied by two adults and one juvenile, overturned in the water while traveling on the river as part of a guided program led by state park officials. The river empties into the Long Island Sound near Hammonasset Beach State Park.

Healey said the two other occupants of the watercraft were uninjured. He said DEEP's Environmental Conservation Police are investigating the incident and noted the state medical examiner's office has not yet determined the woman's cause and manner of death.
