DeepState map shows Wagner Group now controls 4,800 square kilometres in Russia

DeepStateMap.Live, an interactive online map that shows the course of military actions in Ukraine, is now using a new colour – pink – to indicate areas in Russia that are currently controlled by Wagner Group fighters.

Details: There are currently two areas in Russia marked in pink: one in Rostov Oblast and the other in Voronezh and Lipetsk oblasts, advancing in the direction of Moscow.

DeepState reported that Wagner Group fighters currently control 1,039.82 square km in Rostov Oblast and 3,808.98 square km in Voronezh and Lipetsk oblasts.

Previously: On 24 June, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that a "counter-terrorist operation regime" had been introduced in the Russian capital. Roads in the Moscow region are being blocked to prevent Wagner forces from advancing on the Russian capital.

Excavators have dug up a road in Russia’s Lipetsk Oblast where a Wagner Group convoy was spotted earlier on 24 June. Railway stations in Rostov-on-Don are overflowing with people who want to leave the city; there are also long queues at a train station on the outskirts of the city.

Background:

  • Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed that the regular Russian army had launched a missile strike on the Wagnerites’ rear camps. Prigozhin claimed that Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Rostov, where he personally conducted an operation to wipe out the mercenaries.

  • Prigozhin's 25,000 mercenaries are allegedly going to "restore justice" and asked people not to call this a "military coup". Prigozhin added that Shoigu had fled Rostov like a coward and "this creature will be stopped". The Russian Defence Ministry called the information a provocation.

  • Photos and videos of armoured vehicles on the streets of the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don are being posted on Russian social media following Prigozhin’s statement about a de facto declaration of war against the Russian army. Checkpoints have been set up at entrances to Moscow.

  • Prigozhin has claimed that his mercenaries shot down a Russian army helicopter.

  • On the morning of 24 June, tanks and men in uniform surrounded the headquarters of the Southern Military District in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

  • In a special address on 24 June, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is "fighting for survival" and that attempts are being made to "organise a rebellion" in the country.

  • Later on 24 June, Reuters reported that Wagner Group ​​mercenaries had seized military facilities in the Russian city of Voronezh.
