Defendant in Yonkers double homicide found dead in jail cell

A man awaiting trial in the fatal stabbings of a Yonkers woman and her adult daughter was found dead last week at the Westchester County jail.

Luis Ramos, 28, was discovered unresponsive in his cell on March 17, according to the Westchester Department of Corrections.

Other than that he was alone in his cell at the time, no further information was being released, a county spokeswoman said, citing pending state and county investigations that follow jail deaths.

Police Commissioner John Mueller announces the arrest of Luis G. Ramos for the murder of Isabella Triano, 70, and Trisha Miller, 38 during a press conference at Yonkers Police Headquarters on Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

Ramos, who worked at a gas station in Yonkers, was arrested in Arizona on Nov. 2, 2021, three days after allegedly killing Isabella Triano, 70, and Trisha Miller, 38, in their home at 68 Shipman Ave. According to court documents, Ramos had broken into the home, stole money and other items, and stabbed Miller 18 times and Triano seven times.

He later told the mother of his child that he had been dating Miller and went there because he was owed money.

Surveillance video showed that he took Triano’s car to Empire City Casino, gambled there with some of the $2,600 he had withdrawn from ATMs using their debit cards, and then returned the car to the house before being driven away by a cab driver from the company where he used to work.

Ramos then borrowed a car from another former colleague and left the state. By the time he was more than halfway across the country, Yonkers police had found the bodies after a friend of Miller's grew concerned she wasn't answering texts.

A license plate reader tracked the car in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Ramos was pulled over in Salome, Arizona. Authorities believed he had been heading to Mexico.

Ramos was facing charges that included first- and second-degree murder, robbery, burglary and weapon possession. No trial date had been set.
