The Minister thanked Syrysky's predecessor, General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who also attended the meeting, "for his leadership in difficult times and all the work he has done."

Earlier, Syrsky outlined his main tasks, including:

  • planning the actions of all military command taking into account the needs of the frontline for advanced weapons

  • availability of data on all the needs of the front and the situation in each area

  • a balance between combat missions and the recovery of units and subdivisions with enhanced training and education

  • introduction of new technical solutions, scaling up the use of unmanned systems and electronic warfare

On Feb. 8, Zelenskyy issued a decree dismissing Valerii Zaluzhnyi from the post of commander-in-chief, which he held for more than two and a half years, and appointing Oleksandr Syrskyi to replace him.

The President announced the decision after a week of rumors about Zaluzhnyi's resignation and reports of a conflict with the commander-in-chief. These rumors began to appear in November 2023, following two resonant articles by Time and The Economist and a series of events that followed them. Zelenskyy's office has consistently denied these reports.

WP reported that the reason for the possible resignation was the disagreement that arose from different views on mobilization in Ukraine.
