What were the top sports stories of the year in Delaware?
Another year has come and is nearly gone.
In sports, it has left us with plenty to savor, celebrate, ponder but also wonder: “How did that happen?”
Several University of Delaware teams made NCAA tournaments, three more high school seasons yielded numerous state champions and a lifetime’s worth of memories, the Phillies made a stunning run to the World Series and the Eagles’ success hinted that early 2023 may harbor some potential history, too.
But one story in particular, which had nothing to do with wins and losses, caught the attention of citizens in Delaware and well beyond, and it leads our review of the biggest Delaware sports stories of 2022.

5 keys for DSU football as they start conference play this weekend
The Delaware State University football team returns to action Saturday afternoon at Norfolk State University for its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season.
The Hornets finished their nonconference schedule with a 3-2 record, while NSU spoiled Morgan State’s homecoming 24-21 last Saturday. DelState will be looking to do the same to the Spartans this weekend.
Here are five keys to watch for if you’re attending the game or following it elsewhere.
🔒Is Delaware finally looking to move up to Football Bowl Subdivision?
Perhaps it was the recent announcement that little-known Campbell University, a private school in Buies Creek, North Carolina, was joining the Colonial Athletic Association that had a last-straw feel to it.
Maybe it’s seeing so many of Delaware’s former I-AA/FCS peers – James Madison, Old Dominion, Georgia State, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Marshall, Sam Houston and now apparently Kennesaw State – move up to the FBS level.
When information surfaced this summer that the University of Delaware would embark on a fundraising project to construct an $85 million athletic facility with offices and an indoor practice field at the north end of Delaware Stadium, it seemed as clear a hint as any.

After loss at William & Mary, uphill climb for Delaware in tough CAA
The bad omens came before the touchdowns for Delaware on Saturday at Zable Stadium.
The Blue Hens were able to alter what appeared to be their destiny and put themselves in position to win their stiffest 2022 football test.
Delaware wasn’t as overmatched as it seemed it might initially be against the Tribe. But William & Mary was a handful and mistakes ended up contributing to the Hens’ first loss, a 27-21 defeat in which three fourth-quarter possessions couldn’t get Delaware the points it needed.

Special teams, defense push DSU football past Robert Morris
On a windy, misty night at Alumni Stadium, Delaware State sophomore punter Matt Noll came into Saturday’s non-conference matchup against Robert Morris with a feeling that he’d be able to help swing the game in his team’s favor.
Noll didn’t predict a muffed return that would be recovered for an insurance touchdown in the Hornets’ 14-9 victory over the Colonials, but everything else the MEAC pre-season first team punter prepared for worked out in DelState’s favor.“I tell Coach Milstead every week that I’m here to put my team in the best position possible to win,” Noll said after his 11 punts for 480 yards kept Robert Morris (0-4) pinned deep enough all game for the Hornet defense to keep a handle on things.
