Deion Sanders addresses TCU football job report: 'Never believe' the rumors

There was dead silence for a moment after Deion Sanders answered the question.

How much did the second-season coach think about his commitment to Jackson State football while he was out recovering from foot surgery?

"You mean when I was in the hospital bed for darn near a month?" Sanders replied. "You mean that time? Think about what you just asked me. I was in a hospital bed trying to make sure I could come back period and you think I’m thinking about coaching at a college?"

DO THE RUMORS MAKE SENSE?: Why Deion Sanders taking TCU football job would make sense, and why it wouldn't

While Sanders was in the hospital, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Sanders is a candidate for TCU's vacant head coaching position and that he had already interviewed for the job. When asked to address the report, Sanders said:

"Well, TCU is not the only one interested in my services," Sanders said. "(Jackson State athletic director) Ashley Robinson is interested in my services and finishing out what I completed. Never believe rumors, especially when I’ve been in the hospital for darn near a month. So never just go out there and believe what you hear, my man."

Sanders, who recently opened up about his time in the hospital in a video on YouTube, said that he was focused on recovering and getting healthy, rather than thinking about TCU.

"It was on folks' mind, but not our folks," Sanders said. "Think about this, man. I'm in a hospital bed fighting, in a real fight. You and nobody on this line have no idea what I've gone through. You're just going to assume, and guess, and analyze this and analyze that. You have no idea.

"You think I'm in a wheelchair, just to be in a darn wheelchair just because I'm stunting? I'm a dog, man. I'm a man's man. I like to do things on my own. I'm being helped in cars and out of cars, to the bathroom and out the bathroom. You think I want this? You think I'm thinking about departing or doing this or doing that man? I'm thinking about my life."

Jackson State won all three games while Sanders was out and pulled off a dramatic last-minute comeback win against rival Southern in his first game back Saturday. The Tigers are on a seven-game win streak and have clinched a spot in the SWAC championship game Dec. 4.

"Trust me, TCU and several others are not the only ones interested in what we do here at Jackson State," Sanders said. "People are trying to figure out the formula, it ain’t no formula. It’s loving on these kids, challenging these kids, holding these kids accountable, making sure they maintain themselves to be smart, tough, fast, and disciplined and that’s the secret, not everyone has this recipe."
