Deion Sanders on Jackson State football homecoming matchup, hopes for weekend safety

Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium has been kind to Deion Sanders. The Jackson State coach is 10-2 at home in his three seasons with the Tigers, including a 27-10 victory over Prairie View in the SWAC Championship game last season that secured the program's first conference title since 2007.

Sanders' only two home losses came during the SWAC 2021 spring season, less than six months after he was hired in September 2020.

"Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz said it best," Sanders said Tuesday. "There is no place like home and we have to substantiate that. We got to make sure that our kids know how we are at home. That's why the day before the game on Fridays, we go over there and practice early that morning and get a feel for the whole ambiance of things at the stadium. They know when we go there, it's a serious tone."

JSU FRESHMAN STAR TRAVIS HUNTER What Deion Sanders told No. 1 recruit Travis Hunter to get him to sign with Jackson State

Jackson State (6-0, 4-0 SWAC) returns home after cruising to a 48-8 victory over Bethune-Cookman at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday. Sanders and his undefeated Tigers welcome Campbell (4-2, 2-0 Big South) for their 2022 homecoming, a year after 53,578 fans watched JSU dominate Alabama State 28-7 in last year's homecoming game.

However, dominance on the field isn't the only thing Sanders is concerned with during the weekend's festivities.

"It should be a windfall for the for the whole city," Sanders said. "I just want the city to prosper. But one thing I do desire is for us to unite and put a cease on the crime and ignorance for the weekend. I wish it would cease forever. But I'm just gonna take one step at a time. No crime this weekend. No killings this weekend. No robberies this weekend.

"Let's just show love all weekend. That would be a true blessing. That's what I want to see in Jackson."

The Fighting Camels, followed by Southern at home on Oct. 29, start a huge two-week stretch as Jackson State looks to defend its conference championship. Campbell has cruised to four consecutive victories after losing to East Carolina 49-10 on Sept. 17. The latest victory came in a 41-10 blowout over Robert Morris.

Southern has dominated in its last three matchups — outscoring opponents 125-30 during that span. The Jaguars outlasted Alcorn State 21-17 on Saturday.

Sanders is expecting Campbell and Southern's best shot over the next two weeks.

"Every game is a Super Bowl to us," Sanders said. "Everybody plays us like it's the SWAC championship. It's like that every week."
