Deion Sanders proud of records Jackson State football broke for attendance

Former Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders is gone and coaching at Colorado. As he gets ready to coach his first spring game at the school, Sanders talked after practice Saturday about his pride in the things accomplished at Jackson State.

Sanders endorsed an idea recently put forth by Auburn coach Hugh Freeze that schools should be able to play other schools in spring games rather than scrimmages. In fact, Sanders said he had previously spoken in favor of the proposal.

“I said that three years ago,” Sanders said. “That is the smartest thing ever. I mean, you can’t play the schools that could possibly be on your schedule, but I think it is a financial windfall for a lot of universities. You could go home and away. It is a tremendous opportunity.

"We don’t want to play against ourselves and bang each other up. We don’t want to do that, but we want to put on a good show and give our fans the hope that they desire and want to see. I would love to do that. I said that at Jackson (State) when we first got there.”

Sanders went 27-6 at Jackson State, leading the program to consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and appearances in successive Cricket Celebration Bowl games.

“I think my last stop we did some things that had not been done," he said. "We broke some attendance records that have never been broken and where we played it was a sellout, which was unfathomable in the HBCU field. That’s the way we think and what we expect.”

The Colorado spring game is sold out. Colorado plays its annual Black and Gold game April 22 at Folsom Field.
