DeKalb fire crews battle early morning apartment fire

DeKalb County Fire and Rescue battled an apartment fire that broke out Wednesday morning.

Around 10 a.m. fire crews were dispatched to the Mountain Oaks Apartments in Stone Mountain.

DeKalb Fire officials confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that were working to determine if anyone is trapped inside.

A Channel 2 photographer saw firefighters poking holes through the roof, with residents standing around the complex.

Officials were able to go into the apartment and make sure it was properly evacuated. Crews were able to extinguish the fire and found no one inside the building.

Neighbors describe the scary experience after realizing a fire had occurred.

“My cousin woke up and said she heard a lot of noise, which is not usual. She happens to be off today. So she got up and looks out the window and sees people outside. She realized when she opened the door she sees smoke everywhere and her stuff is on fire,” Mariah Turner said.

Captain Jaeson Daniels says the fire is believed to have started in one of the bottom units in the front of the apartment complex.

Officials have not said what caused the fire to break out or if anyone has been injured. Several units have been damaged.

The Red Cross is assisting at least 29 people from 11 different units who have been displaced.
