The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus has a new vice chair.

Del. Cia Price, D-Newport News, announced this week that she was elected to the position on Wednesday.

“I work hard to amplify the voices of those who are often otherwise disregarded,” she wrote on Twitter. “I look forward to using this new platform to be an even stronger advocate for those who are counting on us to deliver on their behalf.”

Newly-elected Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, a former state senator, left the role empty when she headed to Washington, D.C. earlier this year.

The caucus consists of 22 members of the General Assembly.

The group strives to improve the social, economic and educational conditions of African Americans and underrepresented groups in Virginia. It also works to raise awareness about the contributions African Americans have made to the commonwealth.

“This caucus has worked for generations on voting rights, quality healthcare, housing justice, gun violence prevention, economic justice, fully funded public schools, and more,” Price wrote. “We will not let extremists erase our history or distract us from getting needed equity.”

In a statement shared on social media, Sen. Lamont Bagby, who chairs the caucus, said Price would be a dependable leader.

“Cia is someone we can count on,” he said. “I know unequivocally that she has our backs.”
