Delaware County political parties fill some fall election ballot spots, leave others empty

An earlier version of this story did not contain a complete list of unopposed candidates.

MUNCE, Ind. — Republicans and Democrats in Delaware County went about filling some of the holes on the general election ballot after the spring primary election, but local Democrats have left some county races without a Democratic candidate, essentially conceding those races to the GOP.

Josh Taulbee, Delaware County voter registration clerk, said Democrats did not field candidates for county recorder, auditor or assessor or for the District 2 Delaware County Council seat. That means Republicans Ed Carroll, county auditor candidate; Jan Smoot, county recorder candidate; James Carmichael, county assessor candidate, William V. Hughes, District 2 county council candidate and Shannon Henry, county commissioner District 3, will be unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election.

County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman, a Democrat, is unopposed in his bid for re-election.

The deadline for county chairmen for the parties to place a candidate on the ballot was noon July 5, Taulbee said. That also was the deadline for anyone to file as a write-in candidate or as a Libertarian Party candidate.

He said there are no write-in or Libertarians in Delaware County races this year.

Taulbee said it's customary for people who want to run the step forward and volunteer as candidates for any unfilled positions. All of the post-primary candidate additions to the ballot this summer are seeking township offices.
