Delaware County's new COVID cases flat; Indiana cases fall 8.8%

Indiana reported 14,200 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, Aug. 21, down 8.8% from the previous week. The previous week had 15,574 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 13th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 11.2% from the week before, with 707,345 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 2.01% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, eight states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Delaware County reported 186 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 183 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 27,391 cases and 461 deaths.

Randolph County reported 55 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 68 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,419 cases and 152 deaths.

Henry County reported 121 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 144 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 14,449 cases and 238 deaths.

Blackford County reported 27 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 21 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 3,400 cases and 69 deaths.

Jay County reported 32 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 46 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,303 cases and 80 deaths.

​ Across Indiana, cases fell in 51 counties, with the best declines in Marion County, with 1,894 cases from 2,201 a week earlier; in Lake County, with 888 cases from 1,080; and in Johnson County, with 392 cases from 530. ​

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Huntington County with 567 cases per 100,000 per week; Shelby County with 445; and Knox County with 383. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 1,894 cases; Lake County, with 888 cases; and Allen County, with 824. Weekly case counts rose in 37 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Warrick, Dearborn and Knox counties.

In Indiana, ​ 77 ​ people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 78 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,873,396 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 24,339 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 93,641,944 people have tested positive and 1,041,149 people have died.

Indiana's COVID-19 hospital admissions staying flat

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Aug. 21. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

  • Last week: 1,371

  • The week before that: 1,363

  • Four weeks ago: 1,269

Likely COVID patients admitted in the nation:

  • Last week: 68,647

  • The week before that: 69,679

  • Four weeks ago: 73,529

Hospitals in 14 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 19 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 20 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
