Delaware Memorial Bridge construction to close 2 New Jersey-bound lanes until Thanksgiving

Two New Jersey-bound lanes are set to close for months as the final phase of a major construction project to rehabilitate the Delaware Memorial Bridge is slated to start.

The construction, which will close the bridge's two northbound right lanes, is scheduled to span from Labor Day night until the week of Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23).

The project, which is meant to rebuild the driving surface of the 72-year-old bridge, began in the fall and is entering its final phase.

For this final phase, a bypass lane on the Delaware-bound span of the bridge will be built starting on Monday and is expected to be finished by Sept. 8. While the bypass lane is being created, the two left lanes of the Delaware-bound structure will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with a third lane closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Once the bypass lane is opened, the single lane will serve motorists headed to the New Jersey Turnpike.

Delaware River and Bay Authority, which oversees the bridge, said its engineers have designed the project to minimize traffic congestion on the bridges, but that some congestion may still occur during rush-hour periods and peak weekend travel times.
