🔒Proposed tiny homes community near Newark 'a new chapter in housing,' if it gets built

An innovative rental community of tiny homes is being planned near Newark as an alternative to crowded apartment complexes and as a model for sustainable living.

The developer for Arusha Village, a proposed community of 130 tiny homes, says the community will be the "beginning of a new chapter" in housing.

However, some nearby homeowners aren't happy about having renters of tiny homes as neighbors, worrying the development will clog local roads and hurt their property values.

The initial 911 call came in as a person running through a neighborhood with a gun.

But the New Castle County police officers who responded quickly to the Newark-area community on Thursday afternoon didn't find anyone armed with an actual firearm — instead, it was a water toy being used in an increasingly-popular game called "senior assassination."

In recent weeks, the game — which is largely played by high school seniors — has drawn the attention of police departments nationwide due to its potential for deadly consequences.

Gov. John Carney on Friday said he would let the bills to legalize marijuana and create a recreational industry become law without his signature, standing down from his aversions to recreational weed that put him at odds with his party.

Delaware is the 22nd state to legalize recreational marijuana, after a nearly decadeslong fight by advocates and Democrats to enact these policies. Carney, in a statement, said he still believes legalizing weed is “not a step forward.”

“I want to be clear that my views on this issue have not changed,” the governor said in a statement. “And I understand there are those who share my views who will be disappointed in my decision not to veto this legislation.

🔒 Wilmington's Frawley Stadium is getting upgrades but will outfield concourse ever come?

It’s been eight years since the Wilmington Blue Rocks announced ambitious plans to surround their Frawley Stadium home with a fan-friendly concourse that, for the first time, would allow spectators to watch games from above the outfield.

Their optimistic hope was to have the makeover complete for the minor-league baseball team’s 25th season in 2017. The construction and opening of Frawley Stadium when the Blue Rocks debuted in 1993 initiated the development of the Wilmington Riverfront.

Now the Blue Rocks’ 30th anniversary season is nearing with the home opener on April 11 against the Hickory Crawdads and there is still no outfield overlook at the 6,404-seat facility.

John Paul Mac Isaac, owner of the Mac Shop in Wilmington, Delaware, says a man who identified himself as Hunter Biden brought damaged computer equipment to his small repair shop in April 2019.

Hunter Biden is suing the Trolley Square computer repair shop owner who claimed Biden dropped off his computer and never retrieved it, which led to the leak and publication of private photographs and correspondence belonging to the president’s son.

Biden's legal claims, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Delaware, are that John Paul Mac Isaac had no right to access and copy the data on the laptop and then invaded Biden’s privacy by disseminating the ill-gotten content.

Delaware state officials really like Pat’s Pizzeria. And Chick-fil-A. And Cavanaugh’s Restaurant — at least, according to their government credit card transactions they do.

The state recently made transactions using what's called a PCard — a special Visa funded and monitored by the state that's available only to employees on the state's payroll — publicly available. Analysis of money spent by state agencies excluding school districts shows where cardholders tend to spend their money on food and how much. The data does not show what specifically was ordered.

We’ve broken down where state of Delaware employees swiped their government credit cards the most.

For untold years in the mouse-infested secret crawlspace of an attic in Newark, Delaware, a man named Michael Kintner Corbett kept priceless American history locked away from the world.

That is, until the FBI came calling.

On May 24, 2017, FBI agents led by art crimes Special Agent Jake Archer followed a search warrant into the hidden upper room of Corbett’s Newark residence and to a safe tucked in the basement.

In the process, the agents broke open a 50-year mystery spanning six states, 16 museums and dozens of historic firearms whose provenance spans the entire history of America — a rash of museum burglaries Archer calls “one of the largest of its kind that we’re aware of.”

Delaware State University freshman Naomi Rivers of Ellendale attends a protest wearing red paint on her face because she said it's symbolic of the helplessness she feels on the university's campus, in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual assault on campus this school year on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023.

They crowded a table in the bustling student center, just days after a late-January protest. Comparing notes, swapping stories, drafting demands in hushed tones, their words steeped in an already restless campus atmosphere.

They had heard of a coalition forming to address concerns of safety and the handling of sexual assault cases. They heard students might get to lead it. Quickly, they agreed on their worst fear.

“I don't want it to fizzle out,” Jayda Tate said to the group, heads nodding around her. “We don't have the luxury of time at Delaware State.”

Hundreds already filed out of class, finding megaphones to speak out about feeling unsafe or not taken seriously when reporting assaults. Protesters made noise in Dover that would lead to community meetings, news coverage and discussion during a state budget hearing for the public, land-grant university.

Now, students feel that very catalyst has been muzzled.

🔒Luxury living in Middletown. See inside top 10 homes for sale including a $1 million home.

For people searching for a home in Delaware, the community attracting the most new residents has been Middletown, with a central location between Wilmington and Dover and easy access to Routes 1, 13 and 301.

The population grew from 18,871 in the 2010 U.S. Census to 23,131 in 2020, an increase of 4,260, but those are figures just in the town limits, not the surrounding area where dozens of new developments have been built. By comparison, Dover grew by 3,567, Smyrna by 2,849 and Milford by 1,614.

Vicki Feeney, Realtor with Patterson-Schwartz in Middletown, said many neighborhoods offer a “country setting feel,” but are close to restaurants, shopping and downtown attractions.

Family wants more money from $65M Mountaire settlement for care of severely disabled child

Residents on Herbert Lane, a gravel road off Del. 24 that runs between Mountaire Farms' spray fields, grew concerned when they noticed this muck shooting from the ends of a spray irrigation rig. Normally, water sprayed on these fields is clear, and does not shoot out of the end of the equipment.

Four members of a Millsboro-area family each received $2,500 to settle a class-action lawsuit claiming they and others suffered personal injuries as a result of improper waste disposal practices at a Mountaire Farm poultry plant.

Now, the family is asking a Superior Court judge to modify the $65 million settlement, claiming their original attorneys failed to tell them they could have opted out of the agreement with the plant, which violated state and federal regulations. Withdrawing from the settlement would have allowed the family to seek more in damages to help care for their 5-year-old daughter, who they say in the court filing was born with severe disabilities, leaving her unable to walk or speak as a result of Mountaire's practices.

Restore the King project aims to honor Delaware's brewing history

The current success of First State breweries recalls the turn of the prior century and the golden age of brewing when beer production was the state’s sixth-largest industry. Those were days of Wilmington’s wealthy beer barons, whose horse-drawn delivery drays loaded with wooden barrels clopped across the city’s cobblestone streets. It was the time when the enormous statue of King Gambrinus, the legendary monarch of beer and familiar Wilmington icon, toasted a thirsty city from an alcove high up on the old Diamond State Brewery.

A vehicle along Market Street sits with a City of Wilmington parking ticket under the windshield wiper.

It has hurt to be a driver in Wilmington the last few years, and the pandemic only made matters worse.

While a federal civil rights lawsuit aims to lay bare how Delaware’s largest city violates drivers’ constitutional rights by allowing companies to tow cars, scrap or sell them and keep the proceeds, a host of other issues with Wilmington’s parking enforcement practices continues to plague visitors and residents alike.

Drivers have received collection notices and delinquency letters for parking tickets that are dismissed; been cited late fees on parking tickets while they’re appealing them; and, in some instances, weren’t provided information on how to appeal the city’s administrative decisions to court in the first place.
